Strata Festival of New Music
Join us for an outdoor performance of Raven Chacon’s graphic score, Compass, followed by a concert in the Riverview Room highlighting the work of composer, Rodney Sharman, presented in partnership with Strata Festival of New Music.
Raven Chacon is an artist and Pulitzer-prize winning composer. His mural-sized graphic score, Compass, is currently on view in the exhibition Other Arrangements: Poetics of the Performance Score. His score will be interpreted by Saskatoon-based visual artist and musician Aurora Wolfe.
Rodney Sharman is one of Canada’s most performed composers. Originally from Biggar, and now living in Vancouver, his thoughtful, delicate chamber music for piano, guitar, soprano, bass baritone, and flute will be performed by Naomi Piggott Suchan, Walter Hoffmeister, Chelsea Mahan, Garry Gable, and Joey Zhuang. Included in the program is the work Famous Last Words, a musical setting of some of history’s most famous last words, including Goethe, Gertrude Stein, and longtime University of Saskatchewan Composition Professor Murray Adaskin, among others.

About the Artists
Rodney Sharman lives on traditional Musqueam territory in Vancouver, Canada. He is the Victoria Symphony’s Composer Mentor in Residence, and has been Composer in Residence of Early Music Vancouver’s, New Music for Old Instruments, the Victoria Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and Composer-Host of Calgary Philharmonic’s Festival, Hear and Now. In addition to concert music, Sharman writes for cabaret, opera and dance. He sings, conducts, plays recorders and flutes.
Raven Chacon is a composer, performer and installation artist from Fort Defiance, Navajo Nation. As a solo artist, Chacon has presented his work at LACMA, The Renaissance Society, San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, REDCAT, Vancouver Art Gallery, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Borealis Festival, SITE Santa Fe, Chaco Canyon, Ende Tymes Festival, and The Kennedy Center. As a member of Postcommodity from 2009-2018, he co-created artworks presented at the Whitney Biennial, documenta 14, Carnegie International 57, as well as the 2-mile long land art installation Repellent Fence.
His score, Compass, is written for solo electric guitar and is to be performed in an outdoor open space. The mural-sized graphic contains symbols and notation that direct the performance, calling particular attention to the wind, shadows, and other life forms.
Aurora Wolfe is a multimedia artist, researcher, and musician of Cree (Beardies and Okemasis Cree Nation) and Scottish descent. Her work centres on the relationships between Indigeneity and institutions, teasing out stories that have been overshadowed by the dominant colonial narrative. She moves between many mediums including painting, sculpture, beadwork, and music.
