Artist Conversation: Meryl McMaster and Tarah Hogue (Offsite)

Miyawata Culture and Remai Modern are proud to co-present a conversation between artist Meryl McMaster and curator Tarah Hogue. Hosted in conjunction with the opening of Meryl McMaster: bloodline, this event is part of the Poundmaker Performance Festival and Plains Indian Sign Language Workshop.

This event takes place offsite at Poundmaker Museum and Gallery (previously known as Poundmaker Historical Centre), Poundmaker Cree Nation, 15km northwest of Cut Knife.

About the Speakers

Meryl McMaster is nêhiyaw from Red Pheasant Cree Nation, a member of the Siksika Nation, and has British and Dutch ancestry. Her work is predominantly photography based, incorporating the production of props, sculptural garments and performance, forming a synergy that transports the viewer out of the ordinary and into a space of contemplation and introspection. 

Tarah Hogue is the curator of Indigenous art at Remai Modern, and co-curator of the exhibition Meryl McMaster: bloodline. Raised in Red Deer, AB on the border between Treaty 6 and 7 territories, she is of Métis and white settler ancestry. Hogue is a citizen of the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan and a member of Gabriel Dumont Local #11.

About the Partners

The Poundmaker Performance Festival brings together local, national and international artists in an Indigenous community within Indigenous structures.  

One of their events is the Plains Indian Sign Language workshop, which is an ancient form of communication using gestures and movement. This event is open to all People. For more information, please visit miyawataculture.com
