Where It’s At is one of the larger exhibitions ever drawn from the Mendel Art Gallery’s permanent collection. This exhibition of new acquisitions—acquired in recent years through purchase or donation—reflects the energy and success of Saskatchewan: it is indeed the place to be. The Gallery is also thriving and growing, building an outstanding permanent collection that reflects and inspires the community. This is Where It’s At.

Where It’s At is one of the larger exhibitions to be drawn from the Mendel Art Gallery’s permanent collection. This exhibition of new acquisitions reflects the energy and success of Saskatchewan: it is indeed the place to be. The Gallery is also thriving and growing, continuing to present innovative and relevant exhibitions and public programs, and building an outstanding permanent collection that reflects and inspires this community. The works in this exhibition have been selected from hundreds of works of art acquired in the last several years through purchase or donation. They include sculpture, mixed media, painting, photography and works on paper.
The permanent collection is diverse and responsive, building on Fred Mendel’s initial gift of 13 canvases, in 1965, to include more than 7,000 works. One of the priorities in building the collection is to represent of artists associated with Saskatchewan, without ignoring what is happening in other parts of the country. A collection has many stories to tell—stories about specific artists and their development, stories about different art movements and how they are formed, stories of expression and experimentation, and stories about this place, for example. And so, this exhibition is conceived as a story; or perhaps it is more like a sketchbook filled with notations, research, and photos. It offers an outline of connections beginning to take shape.
