April 3, 2009 – Mendel Art Gallery announces its intent to build a new gallery.
September 23, 2009 – Federal/Provincial Funding announcement for construction of new Destination Centre at River Landing.
November 30, 2009 – City Council approves in principle the development of the Art Gallery of Saskatchewan (AGS).
January – April 2010 – Functional Planning Process (to identify the design challenges and parameters, to provide initial rough estimate of building costs, to ensure the project will meet the needs of the Gallery and other stakeholders, etc); Functional Program Plan approved by City Council on April 26.
March 15, 2010 – Fifteen local, national, and North American architectural firms submit Expressions of Interest to design the new gallery.
March 24, 2010 – Five architectural firms shortlisted.
June 28, 2010 – The contract to design the new AGS is awarded to Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects (KPMB) of Toronto, in association with Winnipeg-based Smith Carter Architects and Engineers.
August 18, 2010 – City Council asks the team to “dream bigger” and authorizes design work to enlarge the Gallery for more shell space for future developments and a second level of underground parking in order to build now for future growth.
May 30, 2011 – Concept drawings of the AGS presented to City Council and approved. City Council also approved Administration to proceed to a public open house on the design.
June 3, 2011 — The Frank and Ellen Remai Foundation donates $30 million to the new gallery.
June 13, 2011 — City Council unanimously votes to rename the gallery in honour of the donation. It will now be known as the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan.
June 22, 2011 — Public Open House to comment on the drawings of the new gallery.
December 16, 2011 — Design for the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan receives a 2011 Award of Excellence from Canadian Architect magazine. This is one of eight awards chosen from 163 submissions.
January 12, 2012 — Public Open House to view detailed architectural drawings of the new gallery.
Early 2013 — Construction is to begin on the Remai gallery.
Late 2014/Early 2015 — Opening of the new Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan.
