Statement RE: financial closeout of Art Gallery of Saskatchewan capital project

The building of Remai Modern was the result of a remarkable community effort, made possible by many generous funders.

The shared project received tremendous support from the Frank and Ellen Remai Foundation, who contributed $17.5 million, alongside $4.6 million from fundraising and private donors. These figures do not reflect the additional and widespread support for the museum’s opening, which included meaningful contributions starting at $20. Each donation made, and continues to make, an important impact for the museum.

The City of Saskatoon’s contribution of $39.8 million toward this incredible, purpose-built space, is foundational support for which we are immensely grateful.

A further $30 million was provided by the provincial and federal governments. We are proud that Remai Modern was able to attract dollars to our community through federal funds set aside for cultural infrastructure.

And today, thanks to the generous support of the Frank and Ellen Remai Foundation, admission to Remai Modern is by donation on all open days and free for members and youth under 18.

This City-owned building is a dynamic facility that allows gallery staff and guests to do so much more than was once possible in Saskatoon. We see people use the museum in so many different ways, from experiencing art, to connecting with new ideas to hosting important milestones events like weddings. We are grateful to be a part of many inspiring moments for residents and visitors to Saskatoon.

The construction of Remai Modern has added to the quality of life in Saskatoon. Through this building, we welcome more than 100,000 people through the doors every year, employ dozens of local residents, create spaces for culture and conversation amongst diverse communities, and contribute meaningfully to the local economy. We look forward to continuing to be a place where everyone can connect through art.
