BRAND NAME ANNOUNCED FOR REMAI ART GALLERY OF SASKATCHEWAN
SASKATOON — Following a lengthy brand development process, the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan, under construction at River Landing, is proud to announce an inspiring brand name for the
Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan.
“The name has been embraced by our lead patron, Ellen Remai, and by our stakeholders, including the City of Saskatoon, key patrons, the gallery trustees, gallery staff, artists, and our partners in tourism, Tourism Saskatoon and Tourism Saskatchewan,” says Gregory Burke, Executive Director & CEO.
“The principle of thought leadership underpins the brand and this is expressed through the new name, which also encapsulates the current transformation of Saskatoon. In many ways, the new gallery will trumpet the arrival of Saskatoon 2.0,” Burke says.
“The board has been fully involved in the brand development process, and is very excited by the direction of the new brand,” says Jason Aebig, the gallery’s Board Chair. “We believe the Remai Modern, with its award-winning modernist design, will be a dynamic gathering place for the community and visitors from elsewhere in Canada and around the world.”
By way of background for the new brand name, Burke notes that the modern era began in the 1860s, well before the birth of the province in 1905. “Saskatchewan was shaped by modernism and has also helped to shape modernism itself, through homegrown innovation.
“In terms of art, Picasso painted Les Demoiselles d’Avignon in 1907, the groundbreaking work that launched the new art movement of Cubism,” Burke adds. “That movement touched down most dramatically in Saskatchewan in 2012 through the extraordinary donation of 405 Picasso linocuts to the new gallery by Ellen Remai. The name Remai Modern reflects the visionary boldness of her gift.” Burke says the name also acknowledges the legacy of the Mendel family and Fred Mendel’s 1965 donation of works by the Group of Seven, artists who are credited with leading the modernist revolution in the development of Canadian art. “The modernist spirit of the Mendel family will live on at Remai Modern.”
The gallery has been engaged in a major brand development process for the past nine months and has met with a wide range of stakeholders, community groups, and industry and business leaders, Burke says. “As part of this work, much research has been done on the social, cultural and economic impact Remai Modern will have in the city and province. It will be substantial, with the gallery also contributing significantly to Saskatoon’s growing national and international profile as a modern, go-ahead city.”
Full details of the brand, including the vision, mandate and major plans going forward, will be announced in May.
