Michael Hosaluk: Containment
Essay by Stephen Hogbin
The official catalogue to the exhibition, Containment is Michael Hosaluk's first solo exhibition at the Mendel Art Gallery. Michael has made a significant contribution to the artistic and cultural landscape of Saskatchewan, and his work has received considerable national and international recognition.
Superb craftsmanship, playful invention, and an open invitation to the public to participate are joined together in Containment, offering viewers and experiential encounter with Michael's work. Common chair and grid forms serve as leitmotifs for examining the multiple meanings of "containment."
Michael Hosaluk challenges our everyday habits of perception. His various collaborations and temporary public interventions question the notion of autonomy of authorship to connect creativity with community.

Peter von Tiesenhausen:
Blind Faith
George Moppett
Blind Faith provides special insight into the creative process of the Alberta-based artist Peter von Tiesenhausen, a process grounded in direct experience, personal intuition and the spiritual in nature.
Peter von Tiesenhausen's poetic installation conjures a multiplicity of interrelationships and layers of meaning, revealing a deep respect for the everyday mystery of the world. Through fusion of matter with spirit, this compelling work offers a unique, meditative experience, a healing alchemy for a profane and unbalanced contemporary culture.

Jim Graham: Metropolis
Dan Ring
For the past 25 years, Jim Graham has given primary attention to the urban geography of the community in which he lives. His cool, Photo-Realist paintings of local architectural subjects emphasize precise detail, reflective surface and strong abstract structure.
Dan Ring's insightful curatorial essay places Graham's work within the context of international "realist" movements, which emerged in the 1960's, and in relation to contemporary critiques of representation in our present age of hyperreality.

Ellen Moffat: Blow
Betsy Warland
Blow offers a possible model for exploring the conditions all art has to face the complexity and slippery terrain of the signifying process.
Detaching language from its semantic context and linear unity, Moffat's poetic deconstructions of the spoken word, along with her intermixing of media, proposes an acentred, nonhierarchal system of communication.
